The entertainment industry was amongst a few sectors that saw growth even during a pandemic-infested 2020. And in this segment, it was the OTT platform to which the audience flocked as they were struck indoors during the Covid-19 led lockdown.
Ever since the country went into lockdown, OTT platforms became the first choice for entertainment, a trend that was not limited only to the metro cities. Popular titles such as Sacred Games (Netflix in 2019) and Mirzapur (Amazon Prime Videos in 2020) came out with a second season, reports surfaced of upcoming seasons for some of the other titles that made waves last year.
We at TechRadar thought it would be a best time to sneak a peak into some of the titles that are getting ready as we speak and could hit the screens in 2021. Of course, we are limiting our research only to web series and will possibly follow it up with one more where we will discuss movie titles slated for launch this year.
Don't know about the timer here, but we're exploding with excitement ๐ฅ@BajpayeeManoj @sharibhashmi @Samanthaprabhu2 @shreya_dhan13 @SharadK7 @SrikantTFM #Priyamani #TheFamilyManOnPrime pic.twitter.com/LQYJTyxWl2December 29, 2020
On top of this list is Family Man Season 2, with Amazon Prime Video sharing a teaser claiming that they were "exploding with excitement" over the web series that takes a look at the life of a secret service agent.
Directors: Raj Nidimoru & Krishna D.K.
Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Priyamani, Gul Panag and Shreya Dhanwantry
Platform: Amazon Prime Video
Launch Date: February 2021
Synopsis: The first season, released in July 2019, captured our imagination as we tracked the life of special agent Srikant Tiwari (Manoj Bajpayee), whose work life is not even known to his family, comprising his academician wife (Priyamani) and two kids. The story tracked a potential nuclear attack on Delhi with the first season ending on a razor's edge. The second season was delayed due to the lockdown as shootings got cancelled. Interest in the sequel got heightened as the cast was joined by another southern superstar Samantha Akkinenni.
Maybe it is just our expectations from the crew or could be the fact that Saif Ali Khan is the biggest Bollywood star to feature in web series (Sacred Games), but there is no denying that Tandav is amongst the most eagerly sought title on OTT in 2021.
Directors: Ali Abbas Zafar
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Kumud Mishra, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub.
Platform: Amazon Prime Video
Launch Date: January 2021
Synopsis: Not much is known about the plot as the production company has kept a thick veil of secrecy even in the teaser. What we do know is that it is a political thriller with a large cast that also includes Dino Morea, Sunil Grover, Gauhar Khan, Sarah Jane Dias and Sandhya Mridul among others. All that we get to hear in the teaser is "เคนिंเคฆुเคธ्เคคाเคจ เคो เคธिเคฐ्เคซ เคเค เคนी เคीเฅ เคเคฒเคคी เคนै - เคฐाเคเคจीเคคि। เคเคธ เคฆेเคถ เคฎें เคो เคช्เคฐเคงाเคจ เคฎंเคค्เคฐी เคนै เคตो เคนी เคฐाเคा เคนै"
While we patiently wait for the third season of Netflix's top title Sacred Games, here is another that is garnering interest due to its director's past work. The series is titled "Bombay Begums" and it is already garnering interest around its posters.
Synopsis: The series tells the stories of five women from different generations as they struggle with societal ethics, their own ambitions and personal crises. Set in the modern contemporary urban India, the stories specifically define how Indian cinema was always about men with women only essaying supporting roles. This series seeks to overturn the narrative by having no men's tales synced to the women.
The obvious talking point of this series slated to release on Zee5 is Amit Sadh, whose power-packed performance as a Special Forces officer in Sony's "Avrodh" caught our collective fancy last year.
Directors: Vishal Mangalorkar
Cast: Amit Sadh, Amrita Puri and Sushant Singh
Platform: Zee5
Launch Date: mid-January
Synopsis: Available information suggests that Amit Sadh once again plays a Special Forces officer in this series that is based on the real-life experience of one. The makers suggest that it is based on the life of Kargil hero Major Deepender Singh Sengar, who not only fights the enemy outside but also doubt within to emerge victorious in his pursuits.
We are making a small exception here and including "Black Widows" on Zee5, which was released on December 18. This is the eighth adaptation of the famous Finnish series with the same title which was first released in 2016 and ran for two seasons.
Synopsis: As with the original, this web series too tells the tale of story of three women who are facing marital discord and decide to end their sufferings. They fake mourn the deaths of their husbands while sharing a common secret. Into this milieu comes a cop who is keen on tracking their past lives to see what's actually wrong with their present existence.
And a few more...
Of course, these are our choices made on the star cast and the directors who are at the helm. There are several others lined up for release in the early part of 2021 and some of these include:
Paurashpur featuring Milind Soman
Nail Polish featuring Arjun Rampal and Manav Gohil
Mumbai Diaries featuring Konkana Sen Sharma
Apharan Second Season
Asur Second Season
The Gone Game Second Season

A new leak suggests that Nvidia is preparing to launch mobile versions of its RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 graphics cards, with these new mobile GPUs powering high-end gaming laptops from the beginning of 2021.
The leak, discovered by Twitter user @momomo_us, was from Skikk, a gaming PC maker from the Netherlands, which in a webpage (that has since been removed) apparently listed several laptops running on Nvidia’s as yet unannounced mobile RTX 3000 series GPUs.
The laptops in question came with either an Nvidia RTX 3060 with 6GB of GDDR6 memory, an Nvidia RTX 3070 Max-Q with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, and an RTX 3080 Max-Q with 16GB of GDDR6.
New laptop GPUs
What’s interesting about this leak is that at the moment, Nvidia’s RTX 2000 series are the latest GPUs available in laptops, with the RTX 2080 currently being the most powerful graphics card you can get in a laptop.
However, with Nvidia launching its RTX 3000 series of graphics cards for desktop PCs a few months ago, it was only a matter of time before mobile versions of these GPUs were announced for gaming laptops, with CES 2021 (which happens at the beginning of January) being the most likely event where Nvidia will make an announcement.
So, this leak isn’t a huge surprise, but, if accurate, does give us an idea of what kind of spec these new mobile GPUs will use.
First, it appears that these mobile GPUs will use GDDR6 memory, not GDDR6X memory found in the desktop variants. This, along with different memory buses for the GPUs, suggests that these will be cut-down versions of the RTX 3000 series using different chips to the desktop versions.
Because of thermal and battery considerations in gaming laptops (which are thinner than desktop PCs), it makes sense that these mobile GPUs are lower powered to prevent them getting too hot, and depleting battery life too fast.
It seems like to offset this a bit, Nvidia is boosting the amount of memory on the mobile RTX 3080 to 16GB, compared to the 10GB of faster GDDR6X memory on the desktop version.
We should point out that this leak is far from confirmed, and the original page has been taken down. Still, we do expect to see RTX 3000-powered gaming laptops at some point in 2021, and these will hopefully offer a big leap in performance for the best gaming laptops on the planet.
At first glance, things couldn't have been better for the up-and-coming edtech industry in India. It received total investments of over $2.2 billion. Student count was estimated at more than 250 million up to K12 levels. Paid and free subscriptions reportedly crossed 90 million. The big got bigger through acquisitions while others continued to dream big.
However, amidst all this noise, there were also a couple of big challenges that these edtech companies faced during the year. And, none bigger than the vast majority of India's population that remained outside internet coverage. There was also the case of an edtech company facing severe social media flak over attempts to teach coding to kids between 6-14 years of age.
None of these was making news when 2020 dawned nice and bright, albeit with a shadow of a new virus lurking in distant Wuhan. However, barely 12 weeks later, the country was shut down and education faced its biggest crisis of continuity. Which is where the knights in shining armour from the world of edtech dashed in to help and in the process raked in the moolah.
The 250 million school students had to be shifted online. Teachers had to become digital savvy. And students had to be examined and promoted into their next virtual class. All of this happened at breakneck speed and in the process edtech companies just took over education. From private tuitions to vocational classes, from hobbies to skill upgradation courses - all went digital.
Even Google provided us with indicators of the surge. Between April and December of 2020, edtech searches grew more than 60% while individual companies like Byju's and Toppr saw a bigger surge. Parents ran around seeking solutions to ensure academic continuity for kids, who were otherwise part of a bigger challenge they perceived while working from home.
And then came the deluge
Of course, the madness wasn't confined to a demand push. On the supply side too, edtech firms used the surge to seek and acquire funds, making them one of India's top-three funded sectors. They have raised more than $2.2 billion in capital with KPMG estimating more than 3500 edtech startups vying with each other for a finger in the pie.
Not without reason though as the federal ministry from human resources predicted that India's edtech expenditure would cross $10 trillion by 2030. While the early birds used the lockdown to catch a few more worms in terms of securing extra funds or acquiring synergistic start-ups, the others went about attempting to expand their reach, both at a B2C and B2B levels.
A deeper and wider acceptance
On the whole, the one change that came over the past 12 months was the reduced skepticism around virtual learning. Those that were offering courses to K12 kids, pivoted to becoming B2B startups providing learning platforms, AR/VR support and other tools to make courseware look interesting for self-learning within moderated classrooms.
Another noticeable trend over the past 12 months related to the growth that edtech startups had reported from outside of India's big cities. Byju's claimed that more than 60% were non-metro users, while a research report from Omidyar Network put this number for the sector at more than 70% with users largely belonging to tier-2 cities. These include Kochi, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Patna and Ahmedabad among others.
This surge in demand from smaller cities has also raised a few hackles. Educators believe that absence of robust internet connectivity in towns and villages could result in a widening of the digital divide. Many have petitioned the federal and state administrations to make technology and hardware available to rural India so that children can be helped to bridge the gap.
Edtech companies are holding on to the belief that India's shift towards 5G would drive the next bout of growth for them. Of course, what isn't yet clear is how soon would the country shift over to the next-gen technology in mobile connectivity, given the fact that India is yet to auction 5G spectrum though smartphones capable of tackling it are already a dime-a-dozen.
Some consolidation as well
Amidst all this brouhaha, the edtech business also witnessed consolidation at the top level with mergers and acquisitions topping the best till date. While the likes of Byju's and Unacademy got their hands on younger startups, others sought out small but purposeful innovations such as Spayee that looked to democratise edtech itself.
While Unacademy acquired five businesses including Kreatyx, PrepLadder, Mastree, Coursavy and CodeChef, Byju's acquired both WhiteHat Jr. and LabInApp - the first for a whopping $300 million and the second for an undisclosed amount. Others like Vedantu acquired a stake in the doubt-resolution app Instasolv with an eye on tier-3 and tier-4 towns.
A peak into the future
Overall, the year saw digitization drive education, right through school to college
and thereafter to skilling and corporate training. Suddenly coding became the go-to strategy for parents as the federal government's national education policy defined it as one of the skills for the future.
As the curtains come down on 2020, the questions that remain in our minds include:
(a) When academic institutions open, how are they going to treat digital learning?
(b) How will digital learning percolate to the lowest levels in the absence of internet?
(c) What would be the blended learning models that would govern this space?
Online shopping reached new highs during 2020 and Amazon managed to deliver billions of products worldwide this holiday season during what is expected to be a record fourth fiscal quarter for the online retailer.
The ecommerce giant has released a new blog post in which it revealed that it delivered more than 1.5bn toys, home products, beauty and personal care products and electronics to its customers all over the world.
At the same time, third party sales on Amazon rose by more than 50 percent year-over-year worldwide. One of the reasons for this could be due to the fact that the company has absorbed more than $5bn in operational costs on behalf of independent sellers since the start of the pandemic.
Amazon also recently announced that it would delay its move to raise merchant fees until June of next year with charges for its Fulfillment by Amazon service being put on hold for now.
CEO of Amazon's worldwide consumer business Jeff Wilke provided further insight on the steps the company took to be able to continue to operate during the pandemic in a blog post, saying:
“Amazonians around the world have truly shown what it means to be customer-centric and support our communities this year. When our customers—including healthcare workers on the front lines—most needed essential supplies, our teams and partners went above and beyond to stock and deliver those items. When it became clear that COVID-19 testing was going to be important, Amazonians across the company moved quickly to build our own testing capacity so we could help protect employees and deliver products to customers. And when customers needed a little extra holiday cheer, millions of employees and partners worked together to deliver more savings and holiday gifts than ever before. We couldn’t be prouder of, or more thankful for, our teams around the world.”
Fourth quarter results
Amazon is expected to report its fourth quarter results next month but in its third quarter earnings report, the company said it expects revenue to be between $112 and $121bn in Q4.
If this turns out to be true, it would represent a year-over-year increase of 28 to 38 percent and mark the first time the ecommerce giant has brought in over $100bn in a single quarter. Amazon's third quarter results came close at $96.1bn but increased holiday sales will likely help company push past its previous record.
According to Mastercard SpendingPulse, ecommerce sales in the US grew by 47.2 percent year-over year from November 1 to December 24 as more consumers preferred to shop from the safety of their homes. In fact, online sales accounted for 19.7 percent of overall retail which is up from 13.4 percent last year.
Now that Covid-19 vaccines are being readily distributed, ecommerce sales could taper off next year but Amazon has shown that its supply chain is more than capable of weathering a pandemic.
In all, Flipkart Group’s B2B businesses -- Flipkart Wholesale and 'Best Price' cash-and-carry stores -- have witnessed an increased uptake of e-commerce in 2020.
Flipkart Wholesale app saw 75% month-on-month growth in customer base since its launch in September, the company said in a press statement today. This growth reflects the faith that kirana shops have in e-commerce.
Flipkart has 29 'Best Price' shops in 9 States across the country, and serves kiranas, offices & institutions, and hotels, restaurants and caterers through a membership model. Best Price’s suppliers are mostly MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises).
Speaking about the increased adoption of e-commerce at Flipkart’s B2B businesses this year, Adarsh Menon, Senior Vice-President and Head, Flipkart Wholesale and Walmart India, said, “At Best Price, during the lockdown, we encouraged members to place orders on our e-commerce platform and have products delivered to them. We also launched a revamped Best Price app and website and saw order volumes surge through our e-commerce channels. Our members adapted very quickly to ordering online and we believe this trend will continue going forward."
He added that Flipkart Wholesale, launched in September, has also seen tremendous success from retailers who can now order fashion products just at the touch of a button.
Flipkart Wholesale app which currently offers fashion products -- clothing, footwear and accessories -- to retailers across 23 cities has also just launched the grocery category in NCR on its platform.
Flipkart Wholesale has already recorded 50% month-on-month growth in fashion category suppliers and enabled 2.5 lakh listings on its platform since its launch.
Tier 2 and 3 cities see good e-commerce adoption
Flipkart said its Wholesale app has become a success with 90% month-on-month growth in transactions on its platform. Encouraging trends have emerged from retailers in small towns who have taken onto e-commerce as a preferred mode to do business at ease, it said.
In fact, one in every five customers on Flipkart Wholesale is from tier 2 or tier 3 cities.
E-commerce adoption by Best Price members grew over 10 times across 29 stores, with smaller towns such as Meerut, Kota, Guntur, Rajahmundry, Aurangabad, Karimnagar, Amravati and Vijayawada accounting for a large part of the e-commerce traction.

It is absolutely unthinkable now to even imagine living without your phone and the internet, and being unable to connect with your friends and family around the world. The availability of user-friendly apps and the ubiquity of smartphones, allows everyone to seamlessly connect with users across the world via video or voice, and even broadcast their content online in real-time. It’s easy to see why these platforms that promote videos and live streams are, and continue to be popular.
Video sharing and livestreaming were already on a steady rise at the beginning of 2020 with a projection of 82% of all Internet traffic, but following the uncertainties the year brought, there was significant growth far beyond these projected usage statistics.
During the past year though, BIGO Technology (BIGO) – headquartered in Singapore – was one such company that was able to have a breakout year. Here in the MENA region, Bigo Live, a live streaming platform developed by BIGO Technology, reported that it now had around 5 million monthly active users (MAUs) just in the Middle East & North Africa region alone.
Since its debut in 2016, BIGO was able to incur exponential growth securing over 400 million users and opening over 30 offices across the world. Since then, there has been an average increase of 25% in global app downloads over each year, with the most popular categories of streams being chat, music and singing. In parts of the Middle East, app downloads have a significant increase of up to 237% compared to 2019. Globally, users are spending 43 minutes a day watching livestreams on average, with some BIGO broadcasters in the MENA region having up to a whopping 15 million fans.
On being asked how the company was able to achieve such immense growth over the past four years, a spokesperson from BIGO stated that they believed ‘Localization is Globalization’.
“We are determined to become one of the leading internet companies in the world and we have set the foundation to make this vision a reality,” said a spokesperson from BIGO. “To facilitate this pace of growth, we knew we had to bridge the gap between local markets and the global internet industry. Over the past four years we set up offices across the world and began recruiting local talents who have local expertise, since they are able to relate to the country which they are based in along with the national laws, cultural norms, rules and regulations. This enabled us to get a better understanding of local markets and customize our approach to meet each country’s unique requirements.”
This approach proved to be quite beneficial to BIGO. In a short span of time, the company has obtained tens of thousands of broadcasters, creators and partners around the globe. By providing them with a variety of incentives and empowering them, BIGO successfully encouraged them to join the BIGO global community.
One of the reasons for the company’s success in the region is due to its ability to identify trends and create opportunities for promising talents. A great example of this would be the company’s commitment to Esports and gamers in the region, which is why it launched the first edition of the BIGOFUN Esports tournament for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in October 2020.
“The popularity of Esports and gaming in general across the MENA region is quite exceptional,” said the spokesperson from BIGO. “In fact, Bigo Live expects to have over 2,000 Esports competitors that consists of both amateurs and professionals to compete per season for the BIGOFUN Esports series, which makes this an exceptional opportunity for users to both hone their skills as well as get discovered which could result in better opportunities for them both personally and professionally.”
“We are determined to give people the opportunity to share their talent with the world, to bring joy and value to those that follow and connect with them,” continued the BIGO spokesperson. “Besides, we also see the value of giving back and we believe that it is our responsibility to support those who are in need, which is why we participated in several global initiatives that supported those affected by COVID-19 over the past few months.”
Within the MENA region, BIGO promoted in-app awareness and education on COVID-19 and the proper safety measures and restrictions to keep users and their loved ones safe and healthy. As well, BIGO took the initiative to donate over 5,000 masks and 25,000 medical surgical masks to Jordan in a stance to support the country, and combat the pandemic with them.
In other regions of the world, as part of their ‘Global BIGOer One World Together' campaign, BIGO raised a total of $100,000 in donations for goodwill. The amount raised was donated to the World Health Organization’s Solidarity Response Fund, as part of global efforts to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. The event itself included BIGO Live’s music livehouse, where close to 100 broadcasters performed, and had over 3.7 million viewers in attendance.
BIGO’s achievements during 2020 have far surpassed all expectations and as such on 21 January 2021, BIGO will host their annual Awards Gala at 8pm (GTM+8) on 21st January 2021, on their Music Livehouse (Bigo ID: music), to celebrate the efforts of broadcasters, staff and every member of the global BIGO family. It will light up some of the world’s most popular landmarks that include Times Square in New York, USA and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, UAE, just to name a few with the intention to invite and introduce people to an organization that is committed to bring joy to everyone and connect the world.
2021 will prove to be yet another year to accelerate the realization of BIGO’s vision and mission and take it one step further to become more mainstream and ‘phenomenal.’
When asked about the strategy for the following year, the spokesperson from BIGO stated that, “BIGO will incrementally venture into a variety of pan-entertainment sectors to help elevate the popularity of broadcasters and make them celebrities in their own right, both within and out of the app.”
Given everything we know about the evolution of communications: the future is video; the future is livestream; the future is BIGO.

However, there have still been some excellent offers over the course of the year, and with updated components under the hood you're getting better value for your cash in 2020 as well.
Last year we saw an i5 machine with 8GB RAM, a 512GB SSD, and 32GB of Intel Optane memory going for just £499. That's a stunning laptop deal and if you spot something similar in 2020's Boxing Day sales we'd jump on it because we've only seen very few sales hitting this level of value over the course of the year.
Boxing Day sales: Headphone and audio deals
We've seen some excellent headphone deals so far this year, and with the Boxing Day and January sales approaching, we may well see some of the best prices returning shortly.
The industry leading Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones did see a slight price drop over Black Friday this year, but it was the previous generation that really shone in 2020. Last year prices dropped down to £239 in the Boxing Day sales, but we've already seen those costs sit closer to £209 at their cheapest 2020 positions.
Similarly, the most popular true wireless earbuds currently available have also seen some significant price cuts since Christmas last year. The AirPods Pro buds were only a few months old by the Boxing Day sales all those months ago so didn't see too much cash shaved off. However, we've already seen costs dropping to just £199, and for most of the year as well, so keep your eyes on Amazon and Laptops Direct for more.
In the worlds of mid-range Beats, Bose, and Sony headphones we've seen prices on the Beats Studio 3 and Bose QuietComfort 35 II far outperforming last year as well. With the Beats dropping down to just £149 in 2020 and more wireless noise cancelling cups getting even cheaper, those searching in the lower end of the budget should have plenty to choose from in 2020.
Boxing Day sales 2020: when will they start?
Excellent question, and while you might assume that the Boxing Day sales will launch on Boxing Day - that is, 26 December - we've seen some retailers start their Boxing Day and January sales as early as the week before Christmas in the past.
This is a trend we expect to see continuing online this year. We've seen it happening already: after all, in November, lots of UK retailers launched their Black Friday sales early. The likes of Amazon and Currys assured shoppers that prices wouldn't fall again further on the day - but if they did, people would be refunded the difference.
So while officially, online, most Boxing Day sales will be starting at midnight, 26 December, we expect to see plenty of early Boxing Day deals dropping in the days before. As soon as they start, you'll be able to find the best ones here on this page.
Will the High Street be open for Boxing Day sales?
At this stage, we don't know yet whether shops will be opening their doors for the Boxing Day and January sales. While many stores have opened again since the UK's most recent lockdown ended, there's currently little opening hour information for Boxing Day and 1 January available yet, and of course no one knows for sure how the pandemic will affect things.
Certainly, we advise shopping online if you can, rather than trawling through the Boxing Day and January sales in person. We expect to all the same deals online as would be in store - and indeed more than ever this year.
When will the Boxing Day sales end - and the January sales begin?
This will vary from retailer to retailer. While some switch their Boxing Day sales into early January sales from the 27 December, others extend their Boxing Day deals right to the end of the month. Largely, though, you'll find it's the same offers, just packaged under a different name.
