The answers to today's Quordle, game #1285, are…

  • ACTOR
  • MEALY
  • WIDTH
  • ADOBE

Knowing letters that go together can really speed up a Quordle game. Today, it was predicting the TH in WIDTH and LY in MEALY that helped me complete the puzzle.

That said, I still struggled with a wrong guess, trying “maple” ahead of the correct word.

As with many Quordle games ADOBE was pulled from my memory bank of previous games – this is its third entry since March.

The answers to today's Strands, game #516, are…

  • PYTHON
  • COBRA
  • MAMBA
  • VIPER
  • ANACONDA
  • RATTLER
  • SPANGRAM: SERPENT
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 1 hint

I was expecting the spangram to spell out “snake”, but that would be too obvious – and too short.

Despite knowing what we were searching for, I struggled to find a SERPENT – but did locate plenty of non-game words, so I took a hint to get me going. ADDER set me off and from there I slithered to glory.

That said, I did tap out “rattle” instead of RATTLER about three times before adding the R once there was no other option.

The answers to today's Quordle, game #1284, are…

The only thing that slowed me down today was VALET, although technically ALLOY was probably a harder word given the repeated Ls.

I was helped out by the fact that I have a minor conspiracy theory that Quordle loves the letter V so much it will sneak it in at any opportunity, so always look to see if it will complete any word that is otherwise tricky. And today, it did.

In the early days of the internet my favorite website was a collection of user-submitted half-baked ideas. The kind of things that seem reasonable when you first think of them but then fall apart upon further inspection.

The one I remember was filling speed bumps with custard – in order to still act as a deterent, but also protect the suspension of vehicles. Me and my useless car would love that.

Anyway, I digress – we weren’t looking for half-baked ideas but half-baked cakes today. Not that I’d previously considered that a cake is half-baked.

I wouldn’t say this search was a PIECE OF CAKE, but it was pretty close. BUNDT was a new one on me and something that kept me occupied for a while and FUNNEL is something I thought you found on a ferry rather than in an oven.

Meanwhile, guessing polio instead of FOLIO was a 50/50 situation that thankfully wasn’t on my last go.

I think today's Strands concerns words found in the United States Constitution, but I will admit that I'm not an expert in this regard, given that I'm based in the UK. What I do know is that the words here represent a selection of human rights that we often take for granted, but that are constantly worth reminding ourselves of – especially if we feel they are under threat.

As far as my gameplay went I saw the two shortest words first before the spangram confirmed the theme and opened up the board.

Unlike most days I barely had to cock my head sideways to work out the game words and unusually had to go hunting for non-game hints after completing the board.

I had pernickety instead of PERSNICKETY as one of my non-game words, as this is the UK spelling and one which I thought was universal.

It’s the longest non-game word I’ve ever gotten but was dashed on the rocks of cultural differences. I’m not peeved, but it is odd that US grammarists have chosen this particular word to add letters to, rather than subtract from. A minor quibble.

Anyway, this peccadillo aside, here was a list of words that describe everything I am not – or maybe that I am, seeing as I’ve got such a bee in my bonnet about persnickety.

Also, while we’re splitting hairs, I can’t help thinking Strands wanted to say “painstaking” for the spangram, but needed to lose a letter so went with TAKING PAINS, which is essentially the same thing but less common – a bit like pernickety. I’ll shut up now.

Dear Strands, I think you’ll find…

NYT Strands hints and answers for Monday, July 28 (game #512)

Looking for a different day?

A new NYT Strands puzzle appears at midnight each day for your time zone – which means that some people are always playing 'today's game' while others are playing 'yesterday's'. If you're looking for Sunday's puzzle instead then click here: NYT Strands hints and answers for Sunday, July 27 (game #511).

Strands is the NYT's latest word game after the likes of Wordle, Spelling Bee and Connections – and it's great fun. It can be difficult, though, so read on for my Strands hints.

Want more word-based fun? Then check out my NYT Connections today and Quordle today pages for hints and answers for those games, and Marc's Wordle today page for the original viral word game.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about NYT Strands today is below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers.

NYT Strands today (game #512) - hint #1 - today's theme

NYT Strands today (game #512) - hint #4 - spangram position

The answers to today's Strands, game #512, are…

  • GROW
  • SEED
  • RIPEN
  • HARVEST
  • BLOSSOM
  • SPROUT
  • SPANGRAM: VEGETABLE GARDEN
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 1 hint

Two notable things about today’s word search. Firstly, I don’t think I have ever seen so many five-letter non-game words lurking on the grid. Secondly, a return to whopping great long spangrams.

The 15-letter yellow snake that revealed VEGETABLE GARDEN didn’t make today’s game any easier, which is what usually happens when we have a long spangram. In fact it was satisfyingly tricky despite being obvious what we were looking for.

GROW I found easily enough but a lack of patience and that rich harvest of non-game words tempted me into claiming a hint. This same lack of patience is possibly why I like the idea of having a veggie garden, but my talents lay in killing plants rather than growing them.

My first thought when I saw the theme was that we would be searching for something to do with fashion trends.

After finding STUDY in the grid I was initially puzzled, especially as it was sitting right next to what I initially tapped out as "exam" before adding the I-N-E for EXAMINE. The Spangram came next, which finally settled my befuddled mind.

I was initially thrown by the letter Z in SCRUTINIZE (I'm in the UK, where we use an 'S'), but not enough to trouble me for long. A satisfyingly tricky – but not too tricky – game.

The very first thing I saw in today’s search was the spangram. Actually, that’s not completely true; the first word I saw was union, then I spotted the re and joined the dots.

After this it was a case of a puzzle of two halves, as I solved the top section first before tackling the lower half.

After getting ASSEMBLE, CONVENE and GATHER, I was convinced that CONGREGATE would feature somewhere, but despite it being the longest word in the game and despite the limited space I had left I still struggled to put it together – testament to the genius of Strands. Or perhaps my lack of genius.

In hindsight, I should have seen DANCE CLASS a lot more quickly, as I’d already gotten class as a non-game word – but was completely blind to the word that preceded it.

The other reason today’s game took me longer than usual was that my first hint gave me MUSIC, which didn’t help narrow things down at all. I quite patently failed to “step to it”.

A rare five-vowel day and one of my best ever combined games of Quordle and the Daily Sequence, where everything just clicked.

Luckiest of all was my guess of VERVE with just two incorrectly placed letters in the column. Deducing that there would be two Es and that one had to be the final letter, my first thought was NERVE – but realizing that wasn’t available, I went for the two-V alterternative.
